False Prophets
There are twenty two mentions of false prophets throughout scripture (in NIV). Nineteen verses still using the same words when using the New KJV. Seventeen in the KJV.
Let's see what scripture has to say about being able to discern a false prophet...
Jeremiah 14:14Then the LORD said to me, "The prophets are prophesying lies in my name. I have not sent them or appointed them or spoken to them. They are prophesying to you false visions, divinations, idolatries and the delusions of their own minds.
Jeremiah 23:16This is what the LORD Almighty says: "Do not listen to what the prophets are prophesying to you; they fill you with false hopes. They speak visions from their own minds, not from the mouth of the LORD.
Jeremiah 23:33[ False Oracles and False Prophets ] "When these people, or a prophet or a priest, ask you, 'What is the oracle of the LORD ?' say to them, 'What oracle? I will forsake you, declares the LORD.'
Jeremiah 28:1[ The False Prophet Hananiah ] In the fifth month of that same year, the fourth year, early in the reign of Zedekiah king of Judah, the prophet Hananiah son of Azzur, who was from Gibeon, said to me in the house of the LORD in the presence of the priests and all the people:
Jeremiah 50:36A sword against her false prophets! They will become fools. A sword against her warriors! They will be filled with terror.
Lamentations 2:14The visions of your prophets were false and worthless; they did not expose your sin to ward off your captivity. The oracles they gave you were false and misleading.
Ezekiel 13:9My hand will be against the prophets who see false visions and utter lying divinations. They will not belong to the council of my people or be listed in the records of the house of Israel, nor will they enter the land of Israel. Then you will know that I am the Sovereign LORD.
Ezekiel 22:28Her prophets whitewash these deeds for them by false visions and lying divinations. They say, 'This is what the Sovereign LORD says'-when the LORD has not spoken.
Micah 2:6[ False Prophets ] "Do not prophesy," their prophets say. "Do not prophesy about these things; disgrace will not overtake us."
Matthew 7:15[ A Tree and Its Fruit ] "Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves.
Matthew 24:11and many false prophets will appear and deceive many people.
Matthew 24:24For false Christs and false prophets will appear and perform great signs and miracles to deceive even the elect—if that were possible.
Mark 13:22For false Christs and false prophets will appear and perform signs and miracles to deceive the elect—if that were possible.
Luke 6:26Woe to you when all men speak well of you, for that is how their fathers treated the false prophets.
2 Peter 2 But there were also false prophets among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you. They will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the sovereign Lord who bought them—bringing swift destruction on themselves. Many will follow their shameful ways and will bring the way of truth into disrepute. In their greed these teachers will exploit you with stories they have made up. Their condemnation has long been hanging over them, and their destruction has not been sleeping.
For if God did not spare angels when they sinned, but sent them to hell,[a] putting them into gloomy dungeons[b] to be held for judgment; if he did not spare the ancient world when he brought the flood on its ungodly people, but protected Noah, a preacher of righteousness, and seven others; if he condemned the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah by burning them to ashes, and made them an example of what is going to happen to the ungodly; and if he rescued Lot, a righteous man, who was distressed by the filthy lives of lawless men (for that righteous man, living among them day after day, was tormented in his righteous soul by the lawless deeds he saw and heard)— if this is so, then the Lord knows how to rescue godly men from trials and to hold the unrighteous for the day of judgment, while continuing their punishment.[c] This is especially true of those who follow the corrupt desire of the sinful nature[d] and despise authority.
Bold and arrogant, these men are not afraid to slander celestial beings; yet even angels, although they are stronger and more powerful, do not bring slanderous accusations against such beings in the presence of the Lord. But these men blaspheme in matters they do not understand. They are like brute beasts, creatures of instinct, born only to be caught and destroyed, and like beasts they too will perish.
They will be paid back with harm for the harm they have done. Their idea of pleasure is to carouse in broad daylight. They are blots and blemishes, reveling in their pleasures while they feast with you.[e] With eyes full of adultery, they never stop sinning; they seduce the unstable; they are experts in greed—an accursed brood! They have left the straight way and wandered off to follow the way of Balaam son of Beor, who loved the wages of wickedness. But he was rebuked for his wrongdoing by a donkey—a beast without speech—who spoke with a man's voice and restrained the prophet's madness.
These men are springs without water and mists driven by a storm. Blackest darkness is reserved for them. For they mouth empty, boastful words and, by appealing to the lustful desires of sinful human nature, they entice people who are just escaping from those who live in error. They promise them freedom, while they themselves are slaves of depravity—for a man is a slave to whatever has mastered him. If they have escaped the corruption of the world by knowing our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and are again entangled in it and overcome, they are worse off at the end than they were at the beginning. It would have been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than to have known it and then to turn their backs on the sacred command that was passed on to them. Of them the proverbs are true: "A dog returns to its vomit,"[f]and, "A sow that is washed goes back to her wallowing in the mud."
1 John 4:1-6[ Test the Spirits ] Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world. This is how you can recognize the Spirit of God: Every spirit that acknowledges that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, but every spirit that does not acknowledge Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you have heard is coming and even now is already in the world.
You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world. They are from the world and therefore speak from the viewpoint of the world, and the world listens to them. We are from God, and whoever knows God listens to us; but whoever is not from God does not listen to us. This is how we recognize the Spirit[a] of truth and the spirit of falsehood.
Romans 10:5-9For Moses writes about the righteousness which is of the law, “The man who does those things shall live by them.”[a] But the righteousness of faith speaks in this way, “Do not say in your heart, ‘Who will ascend into heaven?’”[b] (that is, to bring Christ down from above) or, “‘Who will descend into the abyss?’”[c] (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead). But what does it say? “The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart”[d](that is, the word of faith which we preach): that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.
Galatians 1:8-9But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel other than the one we preached to you, let him be eternally condemned! As we have already said, so now I say again: If anybody is preaching to you a gospel other than what you accepted, let him be eternally condemned!
Galatians 5:19-23Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery,[a] fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, envy, murders,[b] drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law.
So, what kinds of things do you suppose a false prophet says?

So, what kinds of things do you suppose a false prophet says?
- Jesus is not Lord and is not raised from the dead.
- They say things that sound appealing, but do not fit scripture as a whole. Especially saying things like, "Works don't matter" or "If you don't do these specific works, then you won't get into heaven." Fruit represents works in the Bible, so the fruit that you should be looking for is whether the work is flesh driven work or spirit driven work. In either case, we need our works to be a product of love and they need to give credit to the Lord so that others are evangelized. (Galatians 5:19-23)
- They do not glorify the Lord, they glorify themselves and their own actions.
- The world at large (including the majority of the media) is going to like a false prophet. False prophets say things that make people feel comfortable about where they are at. They don't challenge you to be better than who you are, they tell you that you are great just as you are. False prophets don't love you enough to want the best for you, they want you to be satisfied with what you have and never want more or expect better of yourself. Looking back on the previous point, they also will be loved because of the glory they give themselves for their works rather than glorifying the Lord.
- They put their own desires first. "If it feels good, then it must be ok" and "I enjoy it, so God must think it is ok". Instead of overcoming natural impulses (instinct) and putting the Will of God ahead of their own desires, they muddy the water by trying to convince you that if it is available to you, then God must have provided it for your pleasure, so it must be ok. "God would want me to be happy."
- What you have done is unforgivable. The Lord rejoices more over a repentant sinner than he does over a man who has never sinned and comes to him. When we turn our back upon our sins, the Lord rejoices that we are no longer in pain (because the person being destroyed by the sin is the person committing it).
